We are celebrating the thousands of individual, human links that join Jordan and Britain. And which join both with the rest of humanity, rising above ideas, which are merely national. We want to take the best of what Jordan and Britain bring to each other, and make it reflect universal values - freedom of expression, individual development and self-realisation, and creativity in the service of the societies we live in.
The tenth anniversary of the accession of His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Hussein to the throne, following the death of his beloved father His Majesty King Hussein bin Talal, provides us with the opportunity to celebrate the richness of the links between the two countries. We are doing this by commemorating His Late Majesty's extraordinary life of service to his country and to the cause of peace and understanding. And by celebrating the achievements of the first ten years of the reign of His Majesty King Abdullah II and the long and continuing relationship between the two Kingdoms with an emphasis on partnership and creativity for a shared future.
The first event was a 'Beating Retreat' at the Al-Hussein Bin Ali Brigade Field in the Royal Palace Complex on Wednesday 20 May 2009. After a fly-past by the famous Red Arrows, The Bands of the Jordanian Armed Forces Corps of Music and the Band of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) played in front of about 320 invited guests. The Programme of Music included a piece composed especially for this series of celebrations and is called 'Two Kingdoms'.
