Career history

Appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador in Amman Jordan in October 2006.  He was born in 1951.
 
He has previously served in a number of positions in the British Diplomatic Service since joining in 1977.
 
Most recently, he served as British Ambassador in Lebanon. 
Prior to that he was Director of Consular Services in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, from 2000-03, dealing with the protection of British nationals around the world and crisis management.
 
This followed a year’s sabbatical in 1999 at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, where he worked on a project on Iraq.           
 
From 1996-98 he served as Deputy High Commissioner in Islamabad, and was concurrently responsible for relations with Afghanistan.
 
From 1992-96 he served as Deputy Head of Mission in Jordan.           
 
From 1989-92 he held the post of Deputy Head of the UN Department in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and Head of the Human Rights Unit.           
 
From 1985-89 he served in the UK Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, responsible in the Security Council for Middle East matters and UN Peacekeeping doctrine.          
 
His first diplomatic posting was to Abu Dhabi in 1980-83, where he served as Political First Secretary. 
 
Before his diplomatic career, Mr. Watt held a post at an investment bank in London, and worked as a conference interpreter in Spain.
 
His university education led to a BA and MA in Modern Languages from Oxford in 1973.
 
Mr. Watt has two children by his first wife, who died in 1998.  He has recently remarried and has a further three step-children.  His interests include hiking, travel, watercolor painting, languages and literature.
